An SUU communication professor and video producer has collaborated with KSL-TV to produce an hour-long documentary on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Swaziland. The documentary, "Saints in Swaziland," will air at Noon (MST), Sunday, April 1, on KSL-TV immediately following the morning session of the semi-annual LDS General Conference.
Dr. Jon Smith produced and shot the documentary while teaching at the University of Swaziland as a visiting Fulbright Scholar during the 2011-12 academic year. During the week he teaches broadcasting and journalism classes and also works on a documentary on the national parks. On the weekends he has been shooting video of LDS members, missionaries, humanitarian projects and cultural events in order to tell the story of the LDS church in Swaziland.
Smith collaborated with KSL reporter, anchor and religion specialist, Carole Mikita in producing the piece. Smith proposed the documentary to KSL because it offered Smith an opportunity to practice his broadcasting skills and gave KSL an opportunity to air difficult-to-obtain video from a remote part of the world. Smith and his family have been in Swaziland since August 2011 and will return to Utah in May, 2012.
