Main Campus Footpath Closed for Improvement

On Tuesday, August 7, SUU Facilities crews began to put up construction fences on the southeast portion of campus, marking the site of a project that will enhance the ability of all citizens to navigate the Cedar City campus. A major replacement of the sidewalk and stairs leading up the hill between the Music Building and the Electronic Learning Center (ELC) will begin with the placement of these fences and should be completed by October 31.

The current stairway area will be closed through the duration of this project. Alternate routes between upper and lower campus include the ramps and stairway in between the ELC and the Teacher Education Building and the sidewalk that runs along 200 South.

This capital improvement project is a major infrastructure investment required to bring the southern portion of campus up to compliance with ADA code. Once completed, the new access—which is now simply one large staircase—will include an ADA compliant stairway, with a system of ramps that will allow all individuals to traverse the elevation change from lower to upper campus safely.

In addition to addressing ADA concerns, this project will also address concerns about failing concrete within the current stairway.

The Carter Construction Company won the bid for the stairway project that will first require a major demolition of the outdated sidewalk and stairs to make room for the new access.
