Two different documentaries produced by SUU have been selected for special screenings during the LDS Film Festival in Orem, Utah on January 21 and 22.
"Born to Ride: Cody Wright and the Quest for a World Title", produced by SUU communication professor Jon Smith and Lyman Hafen, is a one-hour documentary about Milford resident Cody Wright. The documentary details Wright’s rodeo trail on a quest to win the 2008 Saddle Bronc Riding World Championship. The 31-year-old father of four had been to the Wrangler National Finals five times, and more than once the title had almost been his before it slipped from his grasp.
"Jimmie Jones: Red Rock Painter", produced by Jon Smith and James Aton, an SUU English professor, is a half-hour documentary on prominent landscape artist Jimmie Jones. The documentary examines Jones’ early development as an artist growing up in Cedar City and his transition to landscape painting. Jones died a month after the premiere of this documentary. Both documentaries were edited by Lee Byers.
The 9th annual LDS Film Festival features work from all over the world and looks for entries demonstrating intelligence, spirituality, originality, integrity, and technical excellence in their approach to the subject matter and motto of the festival which is “Envision. Create. Illuminate.” Tickets for all LDS Film Festival events are now available at 801-225-ARTS, online at scera.org or at the door. All events are open to the public and take place at the SCERA Center for the Arts in Orem.
“Born to Ride” will also be screened twice during the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering sponsored by the Western Folklife Center in Elko, Nevada from January 25-30, 2010. In addition the LDS Film Festival recognition, “Born to Ride” has also received multiple awards including the Pegasus Award of Excellence, two Telly Awards, an Accolade Award, the Videographer Award of Excellence, a screening at the All Sports LA Film Fest, a Golden Reel Award, and special screenings in Cheyenne, Wyoming and in Las Vegas during the 2009 National Finals Rodeo.
