Dear SUU Alumni,

We will be in Flagstaff, AZ on Saturday, November 10, as Thunderbird Football takes on the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona (NAU). We will also be hosting a tailgate party for all alumni and fans. Tailgate details are to your left. Now that SUU is a member of the Big Sky Conference, a natural rivalry is sure to develop between our two schools. So if you are in the area or would like to travel to Flagstaff, come and join in the fun.

By way of reminder, we have partnered with Harris Connect to produce an alumni directory that will allow you to reconnect with friends and network professionally. Post cards will be mailed later this month asking you to call a toll free number to ensure your listing is completely accurate and up-to-date. We encourage you to place that call - it will only take a few minutes. Please note that if you want to limit your information in the directory or exclude yourself completely, you must call that number.

Enjoy the latest news headlines from SUU and have a great month.

Cheers,

Enrollment Rises Alongside Academic Standards
Carter Carillon Tradition 2012 Southern Utah University's enrollment growth for this fall is exciting news in Cedar City and is right on track with the long-range plan in place with the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE). SUU increased by 3.09% in budget-related FTE, measuring the fulltime equivalent student population at the University. These numbers, however, only tell part of the story.

The University's provost, Brad Cook, was pleased to see not only a larger incoming class, but a stronger one this year. "This class is better academically prepared than their predecessors, and we believe that will translate into greater success at our University." In fact, according to SUU's associate vice president for enrollment management, Stephen Allen ('98), "This year's incoming freshmen class is the most academically prepared group in the school's history."

SUU Alumna Awarded 2012 Teacher of the Year by DoDEA

Angela Wilson, the Defense Department Education Activity's Teacher of the Year, accepts an award from Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta in the Pentagon, Oct. 2. DOD photo. Southern Utah University alumna Angela Wilson was recently named the 2012 Teacher of the Year by the United States Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Schools, qualifying the 2010 SUU graduate as one of just four finalists for the 2012 National Teacher of the Year.

"Teachers don't go into teaching to receive an award like this," said Wilson, adding, "I feel completely humbled and grateful to be recognized and to represent the thousands of teachers in our system. This is really a reflection on my colleagues, who lift me up, and my students, who inspire me."

It is obvious Wilson draws a great deal of inspiration from her students.

"My students are the children of America's heroes, our military members. Many of their parents are deployed to Afghanistan, and the children are incredibly resilient and exemplar American ambassadors," exclaimed Wilson. "I oftentimes am in awe at their strength. If I am the teacher of the year, my students are the students of the year."

SUU Again Named Nation's Best Buy

SUU Best College Buy Southern Utah University is pleased to announce its second consecutive designation as one of "America's 100 Best College Buys." What's more: SUU stands out among the 100 colleges and universities across the nation to successfully balance academic excellence and affordability, touting the second lowest annual tuition among the group.

In its annual appraisal of colleges and universities across the nation, Institutional Research & Evaluation, Inc. has selected SUU as one of only 13 schools in the western U.S. to be included in the list, proving SUU has undoubtedly made its mark as an exceptional institution offering both quality and value to students across the region. With a very affordable price tag, students and their parents get the most out of their educational investment at Southern Utah University.

According to Associate Vice President for Enrollment Stephen Allen ('98), that is precisely what SUU aims to do each new academic year. "Being recognized as one of America's 100 Best College Buys validates SUU's efforts to provide students with a high quality education at an affordable price."

Get Published: Kolob Canyon Review Accepting Lit & Art Entries
For the past two decades, the Kolob Canyon Review has given SUU's up-and-coming writers an opportunity to get published, which is not an easy feat in the highly competitive industry of fiction and poetry. Now in its 21st year, the student-produced publication continues to make great strides in both the quality and number of its published works, all thanks to an expanding and increasingly accomplished base of student contributors.

Through the end of November, the Kolob Canyon Review (KCR) is once again soliciting writing submissions for its upcoming spring publication, inviting all current SUU students, across all majors, as well as alumni to submit their work for consideration. What's more, editors are also accepting art submissions, with opportunities for photography, drawing and painting.
