Dear Ron,

September is an exciting month for the Alumni Association as it is filled with activity.

September 21, at Noon the SUU Professional Society will hold its third meeting at General Electric in Salt Lake City. This lunch-time gathering has been an excellent opportunity for alumni to network, enjoy lunch, reunite with classmates and hear a short presentation. We invite you to attend.

September 24, is Thor's Thunder Classic at Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club. The tournament has become a premier event and provides a boost to scholarships and Alumni programming. A big thank you to Color Country Pediatrics and alumni Dr. Brian Burrows ('98) and Dr. Craig Nielson ('01) for being our title sponsor.

September 27-29 is Homecoming - True to SUU and the schedule is filled with events and activities that provide you the opportunity to reconnect with friends and your alma mater. We invite you to come to campus and celebrate with us.

Homecoming Banquet Honorees

You are cordially invited to attend the annual Homecoming Banquet on Thursday, September 27, at 6:30 p.m. (reception at 6:00 p.m.) in the Gilbert Great Hall of the Hunter Conference Center. Tickets are $13 and can be reserved by calling Ryan Richey at 435-865-8221 or by email

The Homecoming Banquet is a wonderful tradition that provides us the opportunity to celebrate our alma mater and renew the common bond that we all share as alumni of SUU. Each year we recognize alumni who, like many in our association, have made an impact in their chosen careers, in their communities and in the lives of others. This year's honorees are Ellen Wheeler, Craig Jones and Jamie Shaw.

Ellen Wheeler, Homecoming 2012 Outstanding Alumnus Ellen, who is among the most esteemed veterans of SUU's theatre arts program, forged a stellar career in daytime television over four decades. Winner of daytime Emmys for roles on All My Children and Another World, she went on to write, direct and produce, notably for Guiding Light, which earned her a third Emmy for best drama series in 2007 as the show's executive producer.

Craig, associate professor emeritus of political science at SUU, Craig Jones, Homecoming 2012 Distinguished Service Award Recipient spent 35 years as a greatly valued and highly effective educator for the University. He touched the lives of countless students as he fostered in them a love for the American political system and a desire to understand and to contribute to the decisions that shaped their communities. Additionally, he was the driving force behind what has become the Michael O. Leavitt Center for Politics and Public Service.

Jamie, who was heavily involved in student government and the Jamie Shaw, Homecoming 2012 Young Alumnus Alpha Phi Sorority at SUU, travels the world as senior consultant with Event Knowledge Services, currently involved in the 2020 Istanbul Olympic bid. She has previously consulted on a variety of Olympic and international games on many levels and spent four years as business systems manager for Starbucks Coffee Company. Prior to that, she was the manager of HR planning and operations for the Salt Lake Olympic Organizing Committee.

Old Main Homecoming Celebration - Forever Red

Old Main Homecoming Celebration - Forever Red Join us Friday, September 28, as SUU's Upper Quad will once again be filled with entertainment, lights, food and fireworks.

The celebration starts at 7:30 p.m. when the Joe Muscolino Band brings its energy and enthusiasm to the stage performing classic and current hits that everyone will recognize. At 9:15 p.m. the Quad will then come alive with Thunderbird Pride as we rally around our student athletes in celebration of the upcoming Homecoming competition.

Following the Pep Rally, at roughly 9:45 p.m., the skies around the Upper Quad will light up with a spectacular fireworks show. At 10:00 p.m., A Rocket To The Moon will wrap-up the evening with their infectious collection of upbeat pop music.

There is no charge and all are welcome to join the festivities. Don't miss out on what is sure to be a fantastic evening!
