- Said Bahi Presents at the 2009 INFORMS Western Regional Meeting
Faculty member Said Bahi presented Students Persistence: A Discrete-time Hazard Study of Duration in the Case of Math Enrollment at the 2009 INFORMS (Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences) Western Regional Meeting, held April 24-25, 2009, in Tempe, AZ.
Abstract:
The analysis of student math-dropout is considered using a discrete-time survival model. Students transition from seeking a math degree to switching enrollment to a different department is the main focus. The problem of when events occur and the time to events are studied. In this work, an empirical study is used to clarify these questions for mathematical science and mathematics education students at a regional university. The longitudinal data cover the period 1999 to 2007.
- Jim Brandt Gives Mathematica Demonstration at Conference
Faculty member Jim Brandt presented Interactive Demonstrations using Mathematica at the 2009 Utah Coalition for Educational Technology Conference, held March 6-7, 2009, in Salt Lake City.

Discussion will cover the current state of RFID or Automated Equipment Identification (AEI) utilized by all railroads in North America since 1992. Circumstances created a one vendor solution whose technology has remained virtually unchanged for the past 25 years. Conditions which led a small business located in Northern Nevada to change the direction of this technology forever will be talked about. Also covered will be the opportunities created by the convergence of EPC Global open standard and AEI RFID formats. Finally, the presentation will review the applications to rail both in North America and the world.
