Agriculture & Nutrition Science

Agriculture

Agricultural Science and Industries students gain a broad education in agriculture and an opportunity to emphasize their area of greatest interest through extensive hands-on and face-to-face educational opportunities at our 800-acre farm and 2800-acre ranch. The main areas of focus include agribusiness, plant science, animal science, range management, equine science, natural resources, horticulture, and pre-veterinary medicine. Students become qualified for a wide variety of agriculture industry based careers.

Nutrition Science

Recognizing the critical role of nutrition to all human endeavors, nutrition students combine their personal or professional interests with knowledge to provide sound, science-based principles, theories, and applications. The nutrition program prepares students for a number of nutrition related careers or entrance into a graduate program upon completion. Additionally, the program promotes wellness by offering courses to compliment a variety of other disciplines, especially those related to health and human services, and athletics.

Biology

A degree in biology is the perfect starting point because this degree can take you to so many different fields. Our goal is to provide students with quality classroom experiences, coupled with unparalleled laboratory and field experiences that will prepare you for a wide range of careers. We provide considerable freedom of choice to design a program of study that will meet your individual objectives. To guide you properly through your degree we suggest that you find and meet with a faculty member that closely matches your career goals. Simply stated, tell us where you want to go and we can help you get there.

Integrated Engineering

Integrated Engineering provides a broadly based, cross disciplinary engineering education founded upon a design-oriented curriculum which integrates several disciplines into a whole, enabling graduates to undertake the wide variety of design and manufacturing challenges that modern industry faces.

Well-trained engineers play an increasingly important role in solving the problems of a complex technological society. There are many job opportunities in the various engineering fields, requiring competent skills and leadership, and providing high salaries. Two engineering programs are offered: Integrated Engineering and Pre- Engineering. The Integrated Engineering program is a four-year, ABET* accredited program leading to the B.S. degree in Integrated Engineering. The pre-engineering program leads to the Associate of Pre-Engineering (APE) degree. All courses offered are professional-track engineering courses.

Math

The Mathematics Department at SUU not only offers degrees in Pure Math and Math Education, but Actuarial Science as well. We have an excellent track record of students getting jobs or being accepted into graduate school after graduation. Jobs in these three fields of mathematics are among the highest rated in job satisfaction, pay and occupational outlook. As we have only around 100 students pursuing degrees in the math department, there are also excellent opportunities for undergraduate research, travel to conferences, and getting to know your professors on an individual basis. 11 of our 13 full-time faculty members hold a Ph.D. in Math or Math Education.

Nursing

The Department of Nursing is made up of academic programs that prepare individuals for professional nursing practice. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is recommended for students preparing for entry into nursing practice. We offer a learning-centered education that meets the requirements for a baccalaureate degree at SUU and ensures that graduates have the abilities to be successful professional nurses. The purpose of the Department of Nursing is to provide learning opportunities that engage students in a comprehensive program of classroom and experiential learning that emphasizes caring, critical thinking, problem solving, ethical decision making, and communication.

Physical Science

The multidisciplinary Department of Physical Science at Southern Utah University offers undergraduate. programs in Chemistry, Geosciences, Geographic Information Systems, and Physics. Our dedicated and highly qualified faculty represent numerous disciplines, offering students expertise in the classroom and a wide variety of undergraduate research opportunities. A low student to faculty ratio guarantees a close working relationship between students and their professors, especially in upper division classes.

Undergraduate research is stressed within the Department of Physical Sciences, offering our students a key element for admission to top graduate schools and professional programs. The outstanding natural features of southern Utah provide world class research opportunities which are enhanced with our partnership with Bryce Canyon National Park and membership in the Colorado Plateau Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit.

Our labs are well equipped, offering students exposure to modern instrumentation such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and x-ray spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and atomic absorption spectroscopy, among others. We also maintain a modern astronomical observatory and a cutting edge GIS laboratory. These and other features make Southern Utah University the premier institution for undergraduate science education in the state of Utah.
