Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: Exploring the world of human emotion, identity, and connectivity through visual language is the realm in which photographer, Kurt Simonson lives. This artist shares his craft during a presentation for SUU’s Department of Art and Design’s weekly lecture series, Art Insights, on Thursday April 4, 2013. The lecture begins at 7pm in SUU’s Centrum Arena, Section K. Admission is free and the general public is encouraged to attend.


Kurt Simonson is an artist and educator based in Long Beach, California. His work explores the tensions surrounding traditional ideas of home and community, pilgrimage and displacement, and belonging and connectivity. Simonson's work is regularly exhibited throughout the country and internationally, including exhibits at the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado and at the Foto8 Gallery in London, England. In 2012, he received a Curator’s Choice award from CENTER Santa Fe, and he was chosen as a top 200 finalist in Photolucida's Critical Mass. His work has been published in Fraction Magazine and Lenscratch.

Simonson received a bachelor of science in studio art from Biola University in La Mirada, California, where he currently teaches as an associate professor of photography in the art department. He received a master of fine arts in photography from California State University in Long Beach. In his presentation, Simonson will focus on two of his projects: "Northwoods Journals," which explores the myth and memory of his Minnesota upbringing, and "A Thin Silence," a still life project documenting alternative community living. Art Insightsis a weekly program hosted during the fall and spring semesters by SUU’s Art and Design faculty. Students and community members meet weekly to experience presentations and discussions by visiting artists and art educators from around the nation who share their work, insights, and attend gallery openings.
