Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: Represented by galleries in the U.S. and Europe and published throughout the world, Aline Smithson creates her award-winning photography with humor, compassion, and a 50-year-old camera. Smithson’s previous career as a New York fashion editor that worked alongside the greats of fashion photography is evident in her thoughtfully stylized compositions. This presentation of SUU’s Art Insights series will take place at SUU’s Sterling Church Auditorium in the Sharwan Smith Center at 7pm on Thursday, October 10, 2013. The event is free of charge and the public is encouraged to attend.
Smithson has exhibited widely including solo shows at the Griffin Museum of Photography, the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art, the Lishui Festival in China, the Tagomago Gallery in Barcelona and Paris, and the Wallspace Galleries in Seattle and Santa Barbara. Her work is held in a number of museum collections and her photographs have been featured in publications including PDN (cover), the PDN Photo Annual, Communication Arts’ Photo Annual, Eyemazing, Soura, Visura, Fraction, Artworks, Lenswork Extended, Shots, Pozytyw, and Silvershotz magazines.
Smithson notes that she “takes photographs to allow herself and the viewer to linger a little longer within an image; trying to look for or create moments that are at once familiar, yet unexpected. The odd juxtapositions that we find in life are worth exploring, whether it is with humor, compassion, or by simply taking the time to see them.” This editorial eye for detail has helped her curate and juror exhibitions for a number of galleries and magazines, as well as found and edit the blogzine, Lenscratch.
Art Insights is a weekly program hosted during the fall and spring semesters by SUU’s Art and Design faculty. Students and community members meet to experience presentations and discussions by visiting artists and art educators from around the nation who share their work and insights and attend gallery openings. Admission is free, and the general public is invited to attend.
