Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah: Capturing atmospheric landscapes and seascapes through her camera’s lens photographer Martina Shenal often depicts a sense of isolation on our planet that few can. An acclaimed photographer, Shenal shares her experience when she appears at Art Insights, SUU’s Department of Art and Design’s weekly lecture series, on Thursday, February 13, 2014. The presentation begins at 7pm in the Gilbert Great Hall, located in SUU’s Hunter Conference Center on the second floor. Admission is free and the general public is encouraged to attend.

Martina Shenal is an Associate Professor of Art in the Photography division at The University of Arizona. She earned her MFA from Arizona State University and a BFA from The Ohio State University. Prior to relocating to Tucson, Shenal was an Assistant Professor of Art at the Memphis College of Art from 1998-2004. For her professional work Shenal has received numerous grants and fellowships including two Professional Development Grants from the Arizona Commission on the Arts, a Visual Art Fellowship from the Tennessee Arts Commission, a Western States Art Federation/National Endowment for the Arts Regional Fellowship in New Genres, and a Contemporary Forum Artist's Materials Grant from the Phoenix Art Museum. Solo and two-person exhibitions of her work have been held at the UC Berkeley Extension Gallery, San Francisco, California; Phoenix Center for Contemporary Art, Phoenix, Arizona; Second Floor Contemporary, Memphis, Tennessee; Arizona State University Art Museum, Matthews Center; Tower Fine Art Gallery SUNY-Brockport, New York; and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. Her work is included in the permanent collections of New Mexico State University Art Museum, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Center for Creative Photography, among others.

Art Insights is a weekly program hosted during the fall and spring semesters by SUU’s Art and Design faculty. Students and community members meet weekly to experience presentations and discussions by visiting artists and art educators from around the nation who share their work, insights, and attend gallery openings. Admission is free, and the general public is invited to attend.
