Oscar Wilde’s irresistible Victorian-era comedy An Ideal Husband centers on the seemingly ideal husband, Sir Robert Chiltern. He lives an outwardly perfect life with his beautiful wife, Lady Gertrude Chiltern, and adoring sister, Mabel Chiltern, faithfully at his side until an old acquaintance, Mrs. Cheveley, arrives in town and derails everything. With the help of his womanizing, party-loving friend, Lord Goring, Sir Robert Chiltern attempts to both protect his status and hold on to the love of his wife. What follows is a balancing of realism and idealism in a hilarious swirl of romance, blackmail, hints of political corruption, and roaming letters and brooches that threaten to destroy the Chiltern’s world and expose a “less-than-ideal” past.
