Gayle Pollock, the Executive Director of the Bryce Canyon Natural History Association, is a native of Bryce Valley.  He received his bachelor’s degree in geology at SUU in 1988.  His career has also led him to work as a lab director and geology in the U.S. Public Health Service Region VIII, Denver, and as a geologist for the geophysics/geochemistry branch of the U. S. Geological Survey.  Among his many professional credits, Gayle discovered some rare marine fossils including the only reported occurrence of fossil pearls in the state of Utah.  Gayle has written and presented on the geology of the Kodachrome Basin State Pak, fossils and geology in Garfield County, and the geology of Bryce Canyon National Park.  He enjoys developing science-based educational initiatives for students and educators throughout the state.  He serves the Tropic Town Community Development Council; the Peaks, Plateaus and Canyons Association; the Tropic Volunteer Fire Department; the Garfield County High Angle Rescue Team, the Boy Scouts of America; and in 2004, he realized a dream by founding the High Plateaus Research and Education Institute at Bryce Canyon National Park.  The HPI provides expanded research and educational opportunities for researchers, local residents and the visiting public.  And, Gayle notes, the Institute will continue to foster a longterm link between SUU, Bryce and other federal, state and local entities.
