The Art Department in the College of Performing and Visual Arts at Southern Utah University has received approval from the Board of Regents to be renamed the “Department of Art and Design."
Bill Byrnes, Dean of the College of PVA, notes, "While a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, this one is particularly fragrant to Chair, Eric Brown and Graphic Design professors Henry Brimmer and Dave Richardson."
Brown adds, "The Art Department has experienced tremendous growth and this new title acknowledges the importance of the growing graphic design program within the department."
He continues, “The word ‘design’ in the title doesn't offend the fine artists either, as it implies the thoughtful and professional approach encouraged by the entire faculty. We are excited about the strength of our students, our faculty, and our entire program and are well positioned for the future."
The Department of Art and Design has a faculty of eight and more 133 majors pursuing the bachelor’s degree in Art, Art Education, or Graphic Design. The Art and Design program of SUU offers an array of classes including art history, illustration, drawing and painting, and sculpture and ceramics.
