The Department of Art and Design will feature Steve Jones in this weeks Art Insights seminar Thursday, September 7th at 7 p.m. in the J.L. Sorenson Physical Education Building, room 101. Jones will present “Those Who ‘Can’ Teach: Finding fulfillment through a career in education” in which he will discuss the challenges and rewards of teaching art in public schools.

Jones graduated with both a Bachelors of Science and Masters of Education from Southern Utah University. A ceramicist by trade, he teaches in Washington County where he is also the Visual Arts Specialist and Co-Director of the Visiting Artist Programs. The Utah Art Education Association has recognized him as both the Middle School and High School Art Teacher of the Year for his excellence in the classroom.

His students consistently win awards at the High School Fine Art Exhibition sponsored by the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery, as well as scholarships to schools around the region. Jones states, “My goal is that each student that enters my classroom will feel welcome and will find some success in producing art, and through this experience find self respect and self-esteem. Painting, sculpting and throwing are the tools, self-esteem and confidence are the result.”

Art Insights is a weekly program hosted during the Fall and Spring semesters by the Art and Design faculty. Art Insights brings professionals from many different fields of the visual art world to Cedar City. Admission is free, and the general public is invited to attend.
