SUU Presents A Speacial Convocation In Connection With Cedar City’s Big Read Project

Southern Utah University will present a special bonus convocation lecture in connection with Cedar City’s Big Read project.

The convocation will feature Charles J. Shields, author of the New York Times Best Seller, “Mocking Bird: a Portrait of Harper Lee” on Thursday, April 12 at 11:30 AM in the SUU Auditorium.

His presentation is free and open to the public and will focus on his nearly epic story of trying to write Harper Lee’s biography.

Of his presentation, Mr. Shields says, “Instead of a lecture I give a talk that audiences seem to enjoy: The Story Behind the Book. It's really about literary detective work: why I decided to write a book about Harper Lee, who disappeared from the literary scene in 1965; the challenges I encountered (including Miss Lee trying to dissuade her friends from speaking to me); and the surprises that turned up about her life.”

This is a rare and exciting opportunity and should not be missed. Jeb Brannin, Director of Convocations for SUU said, “I don’t think that I can over emphasize how neat this convocation is going to be. Students, faculty, the community and everyone in between will get a kick out of Charles Shields’ presentation.

The SUU bookstore will have copies of his book for sale and a book-signing will take place following the lecture in the Auditorium lobby.
