The SUU Department of Art and Design has been granted Associate Membership for all their existing degrees by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). This places SUU in an elite group of only 262 independent schools, universities, and colleges. SUU is the only school in the Utah System of Higher Education to earn this accreditation.

“NASAD accreditation is a considerable achievement for the Department of Art and Design,” notes Dean Bill Byrnes of the College of Performing and Visual Arts. “It displays that we are engaged in providing the highest level of education for our students.” The Department of Art and Design is the third program in the College of Performing and Visual Arts to achieve accreditation, joining the music and dance programs.

Eric Brown, Chair of the Department of Art and Design said, "Over the past few years the Department of Art and Design has transformed itself through a rigorous process of self-study and evaluation. Having accreditation with the National Association of Schools of Art and Design is a high accomplishment. Southern Utah University is a great place to study art of all kinds: graphic design, art education, illustration, painting drawing, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, photography, and digital design."

The National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) is the only national professional accrediting agency for educational institutions in the visual arts and design recognized by the United States Department of Education. To earn accreditation schools must meet NASAD’s standards including a self-evaluation of the program, an on-site review by outside professionals, and a review by the accreditation commission. NASAD values center on educational quality, institutional integrity, and educational improvements.

The SUU Department of Art and Design serves over 160 students and offers a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Visual Art, and Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degrees in Graphic Design, Art Education, Ceramics/Sculpture, Illustration, Painting/Drawing/Printmaking, and Photography/Digital Design. The department has nine full-time faculty positions, and numerous highly talented artists as adjunct professors.
