Free and Open to All: Outdoor Education Series Continues

This spring semester, Southern Utah University will sponsor a series of weekly, one-hour sessions presented by outdoor experts. Along with information, the Outdoor Education Series (OES) will highlight outdoor opportunities all can enjoy with friends and peers.

The OES is a community outreach program with topics going as deep as the Grand Canyon and ranging from flash flood awareness to conditioning for outdoor fitness. The presenters for each session vary just as much with them ranging from SUU students to artists, scientists, to members of the southern Utah community.

Admission is free to all sessions. The first begins Thursday, January 22 and will continue to be held every Thursday for the next 12 weeks at 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in SUU Outdoors, located within the Sharwan Smith Student Center (unless otherwise noted).

Increasing outdoor experience is a primary institutional goal at SUU, that’s why Anne Smith, the coordinator of OES, continues to organize these unique sessions. Smith initially launched this program to improve access to outdoor information and opportunities for the SUU campus and the southern Utah community.

Over the past few years, SUU has developed its outdoors program, built a challenge course, installed an indoor climbing wall, offered many outdoor student and community activities, began to offer a four-year degree in outdoor recreation in parks and tourism and, most recently, opened the Outdoor Engagement Center.

SUU’s Outdoor Engagement Center and the Outdoor Recreation in Parks and Tourism program sponsor OES. For the 2015 Spring Semester Outdoor Education Series schedule, check the SUU Events Calendar or the Outdoor Engagement Center.
