The Utah State Board of Regents invites nominations and applications for the position of President of Southern Utah University; the state’s designated liberal arts and sciences university and one of eight institutions within the Utah System of Higher Education.
Located in Cedar City, Southern Utah University (SUU) has an enrollment of 8,300 students. It was founded in 1897 and is a dynamic teaching and learning community inspired by its unique natural surroundings. It provides a broad-based, engaged university experience for students of high academic achievement, stressing experiential, integrative and personalized learning in a residential setting. The University serves the entire state while maintaining varied programs to meet unique regional needs and concerns.
SUU Academics is comprised of five colleges—Business, Education and Human Development, Humanities and Social Sciences, Performing and Visual Arts, and Science and Engineering—as well as two auxiliary programs, the University College and Continuing and Professional Studies. SUU is a member of the Big Sky Conference and sponsors 17 NCAA Division I sports. Students come from all 29 counties in Utah, over 45 states, and more than 45 foreign countries. SUU is the collegiate gateway to five national parks and America’s public lands. Cedar City’s regional airport provides daily commercial air service to Salt Lake City. Las Vegas is approximately a two hour drive to the south. SUU is home to the Tony Award winning Utah Shakespeare Festival and the Utah Summer Games.
The President is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the Board of Regents, works closely with an institutional Board of Trustees and is responsible for overall administration of the University. Candidates must have broad administrative and managerial experience, an established record of scholarly achievement in higher education, experience and success in fundraising. In addition, the successful candidate must demonstrate leadership qualities essential for the administration of a comprehensive regional institution offering graduate, baccalaureate, associate, and technical programs. An earned doctoral or equivalent terminal degree is strongly preferred. He or she should have an appreciation for SUU’s heritage and history while at the same time have a vision for SUU’s role in an evolving and increasingly diverse national and international higher education landscape.
