Parowan Gap "God's Own House"
January 7-January 30, 2010

Parowan Gap is a canyon and passage through the Red Hills west of Parowan Valley. It is said that the widely revered Paiute leader Wakara identified Parowan Gap as "God's Own House" to the pioneers who first came to the area in 1849. Phenomena associated with the cycles of earth, sun and moon create a natural calendar of the year's times and seasons here. The indigenous culture that anthropologists identify as "Pre-Columbian Fremont Peoples" noticed these yearly events and recorded them in symbolic inscriptions on rock. SUU students and faculty will travel to and personally experience the area associated with Parowan Gap throughout the Fall 2009 semester. Through the "symbolic language of art," no so different from the records on the walls of the canyon, students and faculty will express their individual experiences.
