K-12 Lesson Plans

Here are some lesson plans based on the ABC: Assemblage, Book Arts, and Collage exhibition. If you have already participated in the Fall Ed. Program, these are perfect post-visit lessons to continue learning! All lessons include their application to the National Visual Arts Standards.

K-2: Insect Pattern Collage

Students will create their own paper collage using cut shapes and patterns. They will design their favorite bug and overlay it onto their collage. This lesson is based off of Deb Snider’s “Bee’s Knees” art quilt.

3-5: Pop-up Book

Students will create a pop-up book of an imaginary place. This lesson explores foreground, middle ground, and background, and allows students to use their creativity. This lesson is based off of Maddy Rosenberg’s “Shadow of Descent”.

Middle School: Abstract Collage

Students will research collage artists and create a large abstract collage inspired by their chosen artist. This lesson is based off of Deborah Berman’s “9 Small”.

High School: Stab-Bound Nature Journal

Students will research an insect, plant, or animal to create a nature journal about. They will use Japanese stab-binding techniques and a combination of text and imagery in their journals. This lesson is based off of Sandy Bell’s “Canyon Illuminations”.
