The 2nd Annual
SUU High School Jazz Festival
Cedar City, Utah

The 2nd annual Southern Utah University High School Jazz Festival will be held in Cedar City, Utah and hosted by SUU Music Department. The SUU High School Jazz Festival is committed to the encouragement and fostering of jazz performance and education in our schools. As such, we invite the participation of jazz big bands and combos of any kind to register. Our goal is to create a noncompetitive, positive, and supportive learning environment for jazz groups of all skill levels.

The festival will include the following:

  • Each ensemble will receive a 30-minute session in which to perform and be critiqued on stage by one of our clinicians.
  • Michael Vance, the latest guest to join the SUU Jazz Band, directed by Dr. Thomas Herb, in their annual guest artist concert, will present a clinic on jazz improvisation.
  • The festival culminates with the SUU Jazz Band, featuring Michael Vance, Saturday, February 21st at 7:30 at the SUU Auditorium. Tickets are free for students and directors with registration.

Registration is $125.00, which includes student and director tickets to SUU Jazz Band featuring Michael Vance and the improvisation clinic. Additional groups from each school are welcome with an additional $25.00 fee per group. An SUU Jazz Festival t-shirt will be available for pre-order for $7.00.

 A native of Vancouver Washington, Michael Vance earned a Bachelor of Music Degree in Saxophone Performance and Pedagogy from Brigham Young University and a Master of Music Degree in Jazz Studies from Indiana University, where he was an Associate Instructor.

Michael has worked with numerous professional ensembles, including the Jimmy Dorsey Jazz Orchestra, the Guy Lombardo Jazz Orchestra, the Larry Elgart Jazz Orchestra, the Gene Krupa Big Band, the David Baker Jazz Quintet, the Utah Symphony, and the Four Tops. Michael has also performed with James Moody, Bob Mintzer, Dick Oatts, John Riley, Rufus Reid, John Clayton, Marvin Stamm, Toni Tennille, and Maureen McGovern, to name a few. In the spring of 2007 he performed at the CSM Jazz Festival as a guest soloist with Randy Brecker.

Michael is a member of the United States Army Band, “Pershing’s Own,” stationed at Fort Myer, Virginia. He has performed for various dignitaries and government leaders, including George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. He recently played for the funerals of Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford.
