The SUU Wind Symphony is comprised of outstanding wind and percussion students, both music majors and non-music majors, from every college on campus. The Wind Symphony is committed to the performance of the highest quality contemporary and traditional works in the wind band repertoire. Innovative concerts, adventurous programming, and high level music making are the hallmark of this ensemble. Members of the SUU Wind Symphony have been selected for the Utah, Western, and National Intercollegiate Bands. They also participate in the Orchestra of Southern Utah ( Cedar City), Southwest Symphony (St. George), and the Utah Shakespeare Festival Greenshow and Musicals. Jazz Ensemble - The SUU Jazz Ensemble performs charts involving a wide range of styles written by the best composers of the past and present. The bands perform several concerts on campus during the school year and travel to various location off-campus for run-out concerts. Placement in the jazz ensemble is through audition. One hour of academic credit is offered each term to band members. The groups are serious about having fun through perfecting and playing great music in the jazz idiom. The “Thunder Band“ is committed to establishing a great reputation for the quality of its performances, the popularity of its music and its support of SUU football, alumni, fans and the Cedar City community. This raucous and power packed pep band performs at home football games, which are held in the Coliseum of Southern Utah. This exciting ensemble is comprised of students, both music majors and non-music majors, from every college on campus.
When basketball season begins at SUU, the “Bird Band” will be there to provide entertainment and to give our teams a boost. The Bird Band is comprised of selected students from the SUU Wind Symphony . Members receive a stipend for their commitment. Demonstrate your school spirit, pride and musical ability through membership in the SUU Basketball Pep Band.
Chamber Ensembles provide yet another opportunity for instrumental performance. Among the numerous ensembles that exist in the department are Brass Choir, Clarinet Choir, Saxophone Quartet, Flute Choir and Double Reed Ensemble. Academic credit is offered for each group, and instruction is provided by the instrumental faculty. Membership in the chamber ensembles is encouraged as a means of acquiring and improving playing techniques not available through other ensembles. The literature studied is of excellent quality and yields much enjoyment to the performers as well as the audiences treated to performances each term.
