Meeting was called to order by Earl Mulderink at 4:05 PM. In attendance: Steve Barney (HSS), Briget Eastep (EDU), Larry Johnson (PVA), Blair McDonald (CIET), Karl Stevens (SCPS), Denise Woodbury (BUS). Excused: Pam Branin (CSD), Neal Cox (Student Services), Mark Grover (SCI), Matt Nickerson (LIB & Honors Program), Dane Hess (Student Representative).
Welcome and Introductions
Members of the committee introduced themselves and discussed their experience with service-learning.
Earl began by reviewing the committee’s composition and the university’s definition of service-learning. He shared with the committee some expectations for this year and a short annual report for 2005-2006. In addition, Earl distributed the agenda and associated web links for his presentation to deans, chairs, and directors at SUU’s “Academic Leadership Retreat” on August 22, 2006.
Moving on to discuss the Utah Campus Compact, Earl distributed a current roster of the Faculty Consulting Corps that includes our own Steve Barney. Congratulations were offered to Steve for accepting this position. We discussed sending a delegation to Dixie State College on September 18, 2006, to meet our counterparts and Professor Kevin Burr, the UCC’s Faculty Scholar for this year. Several faculty committed to making this trip with Earl: Steve Barney, Briget Eastep, Blair McDonald, and Denise Woodbury. Earl also mentioned forthcoming UCC events, including the Dialogue on Democracy in Salt Lake City in November 2006 and the Moab Engaged Scholar Institute in February 2007. Finally, committee members were informed how they could access and received the UCC’s weekly electronic newsletter.
Under the realm of “Other,” Earl distributed two news items that touch upon service-learning. First, Samuel G. Freedman offered a cynical take on the practice of “reflection” in “Upon Further Reflection, a Few Random Thoughts,” in The New York Times, August 30, 2006. Also, the Carnegie Foundation’s efforts to acknowledge campus engagement was reported by Audrey Williams June, “Carnegie Foundation Offers Community-Engagement Classification,” The Chronicle of Higher Education, April 14, 2006.
Several items were covered under this category, including an inventory of service-learning on campus (ongoing), creating a web presence (ongoing), revising LRT policies to promote and reward service-learning (ongoing), and seeking funds from both internal and external sources (ongoing). Most of our discussion focused on the budget proposed by Earl and outlined below. Committee members expressed their appreciation to Provost Harraf for an substantial increase in funding for service-learning and civic engagement.
