Parent & Guest Orientation

Parent & Guest Orientation offers an opportunity to learn about the exciting new experiences that await your student as they enter Southern Utah University. Parents and guardians are encouraged, but not required, to attend this program, which runs concurrently with our student program during Traditional Orientation sessions.  There is a small additional fee to cover the cost of food for guests.

By attending Parent & Guest Orientation, you will:

  • Gain an understanding of the resources available to SUU students and parents
  • Feel more connected to the University
  • Be better prepared to support and empower your student
  • Understand the University's academic expectations

Parent & Guest Programs

The Parent & Guest Orientation program is held concurrently with New Student Orientation. Although parents and guest will accompany students for a portion of the day, there will be multiple occasions when parents and guests will break away from students for specific programs. These programs include the following:

Special Address to Family Members

By Jerry Roeder, Dean of Students

Hear from SUU’s President or Provost on why they are passionate about SUU and how important they know parents are as a part of the new student experience.  This presentation finishes up with information on how to support your students in their college transition

The Academic Side of Life

This presentation features Kelly Stephens, Director of Academic Advising and faculty member Todd Petersen.  Learn more about the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act and what rights you have as a parent.  This session also covers details related to your student’s academic success at SUU.

Parent Panel

SUU staff and administrators, along with current students, answer questions and concerns specific to parents during this Q&A session.

Breakout Sessions

You will have a chance to attend two out of four sessions of your choosing on topics from Housing to the EDGE program.

Evening Reception (for Overnight Orientations Only)

Those parents attending an Overnight Orientation will be treated to a free movie at the Cedar Historical Theatre, located on Main Street in Cedar City.

Money Matters

In this session, members of SUU’s Financial Aid Office present the different options available to students and parents for financing a college education.  This includes federal work study, grants, loans, and other scholarship programs.

Cost To Attend

The cost of Parent & Guest Orientation is $15 per person for a traditional orientation or $30 for an overnight orientation. This charge includes lunch and program materials and is non-refundable.

On-campus housing is not provided for guests, so you are responsible for your own lodging in Cedar City. Some hotels offer SUU parent discounts.

Sign Up

Sign up for the Parent & Guest Orientation program is included in the online reservation form when your student signs up for Orientation. The Parent & Guest Orientation fee will be added to your student's Orientation charge when making the reservation.

Changing A Confirmed Session

With Your Student

If your student is requesting to change to his/her Orientation session, you will automatically be included in that request unless the Orientation office receives alternative instructions.


Without Your Student

Parents and guests may request a change to their assigned Parent & Guest Orientation session by e-mail. There is no fee for Parent & Guest Orientation session changes.
