Academic Advising

Academic advising is a process designed to help students with educational planning, courses of instruction, institutional policies and procedures, career options, and information resources.  Both the student and the adviser have specific roles. Students are responsible for seeking academic advisement and monitoring their progress towards graduation.  Advisers are available to render assistance and provide accurate information. Students should work with advisers prior to registration to ensure progress towards a degree or certificate.  The following guidelines are available to assist students in seeking academic advisement:

Academic advisers can:

  • help students clarify educational goals
  • interpret university policies and academic requirements
  • help students select appropriate course work
  • refer students to additional sources of information or assistance.

Over the past few years, SUU has added more academic advisers to better meet student needs. Each college or school now has a full-time academic adviser in addition to the five advisers in the Student Success Center. College/School advisers can help students both with planning majors and minors as well as general education requirements.

  •  Sophomores, juniors, and seniors should meet with the adviser in the college/or school of the student’s declared major listed below.
  •  Students who have not declared a major have an assigned adviser in the Student Success Center.
  • Freshmen students will have an assigned academic adviser in either the Student Success Center or in the college/or school of the student’s declared major and may contact the Student Success Center for specific adviser information.
  • NCAA athletes should meet with their academic adviser and then contact the athletic academic coordinator to verify eligibility requirements.

Before meeting with an academic adviser, students may want to:

  • consider possible course options or areas or interest
  • prepare any questions for the adviser
  • review the SUU general catalog and class schedule
