Counseling and Psychological Services Vision Statement

The Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) exists to aid students address personal, social, and academic challenges. These services are designed to help students understand themselves, create and maintain satisfying relationships, improve their academic performance, and make satisfying career and life choices.

The majority of students are fairly well adjusted though they may need guidance and support for the transitions they encounter commensurate with their age and developmental stage.  Some students, while gifted academically, have serious social and emotional deficits.  The meeting of transitional, remedial and situational needs of such students offers a better chance for retention, graduation, and post-college success.  Our goal is to facilitate and enrich the overall development and well-being of students at the University, with the hope that when they leave here, they will be healthy, happy, productive individuals and citizens of the world community.

The CAPS efforts, carried out via four service areas (Clinical Services, Outreach and Consultation, Training, and Research and Development), are designed to empower students to become complete, balanced, and resourceful, with a sense of purpose. CAPS serves this mission by providing individual, couples and group counseling, as well as psychological assessment, to those in need of remediation and enhancement; outreach and consultation to those wishing information; training opportunities to students wishing to develop specialized skills in the behavioral sciences, and research and development to improve efficacy of services.
