COMPASS Program

SUU is committed to every student's success.

If your high school GPA falls below the threshold for admission, we welcome you to join us through our COMPASS (COMPrehensive Academic Support & Success) program.

In the COMPASS program, you enroll in the required SUU 1050: College Student Success course (2 credits) and participate in 1-on-1 peer coaching in your first semester.

Whether you have just graduated from high school or are coming to college after a break, we respect the journey that brought you here. We are ready to partner with you to unlock your academic potential.

  • Personalized peer coaching.
  • Sharpened study and time management skills.
  • Tips on how to work with professors.
  • Time and guidance to build up a diverse support network.
  • Increased academic confidence.
  • Stronger commitment to academic and personal goals.
  • Built-in community of first-semester students to collaboratively problem-solve common first-year challenges.
Across the nation, students who participate in programs like COMPASS have a greater success rate completing their university studies.
COMPASS is a provisional admission program, which means you are admitted to SUU under a specific set of conditions designed to help you thrive.

In your first semester, you:

  • Are admitted as an associate’s-degree-seeking student.
  • May take on-campus classes only.
  • May register for up to 15 credits, including the required SUU 1050: College Student Success (2 credits).
  • May declare a major in a bachelor’s degree program as soon as you earn academic good standing (a cumulative GPA ≥ 2.0 and a “C” (73%) or higher in SUU 1050).
  • Must earn a semester GPA ≥ 2.0 and a “C” (73%) or higher in SUU 1050 by the end of your second semester to continue attending SUU.
  • Actively participate in SUU 1050.
  • Meet regularly with a peer academic coach, as part of your SUU 1050 course.
  • Meet with all professors as part of a “Midterm Progress Report” activity in SUU 1050.
  • Meet with your Student Success Advisor (Academic Advisor) to plan your next semester classes.
  • Keep an open mind about the ways that SUU 1050 can help you design the semester experience you most want for yourself.
Once you finalize your COMPASS admission:

  • Activate your SUU Portal. Click on the “Activate your account now” link, enter your email address, and complete the process through email.
  • Complete the steps on the New Student Checklist (which includes taking the TTQ survey to let your advisor know that you are ready to register for classes).
  • Pay tuition to the Cashier’s Office before the first day of the semester. This step may involve accepting financial aid awards and scholarships, setting up a payment plan, etc.

Questions are great! Please contact Elizabeth Cox, Asst. Director of COMPASS & Academic Recovery, at elizabethcox1@suu.edu.
