Child and adult painting a ceramic mug

Supplies

  • Porcelain mug
  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Americana 3D Gloss Enamel Paint
  • Cotton swab
  • Oven

Steps

  1. Ask your child to draw anything simple enough that you can transfer to a mug.
  2. Cut around the drawing and hold it against the mug to decide where you will place it.
  3. Using the side of your pencil, cover the entire back of the drawing with graphite.
  4. Wash the surface of your mug using rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball. Allow it to dry.
  5. Tape the drawing in place on the mug.
  6. Trace over your lines, pressing hard to transfer the drawing onto the mug. When you’ve traced every line, pull the drawing off and set it aside.
  7. Trace the drawing on the mug using the gloss enamel paint. You’ll need to be careful as you work so you don’t rub off your transferred pencil lines or smudge your painted lines.
  8. If you make a mistake with the enamel paint, use a wet cotton swab to carefully wipe away the paint. Once the mug dries, repaint your line.
  9. Follow the directions on the bottle of paint to make it permanent. Allow the paint to dry for 48 hours. Then place the mug into a cool oven and set the heat to 200 degrees. Bake it for 30 minutes, then turn off the heat and allow the mug to cool completely in the oven. Your mug will now be completely dishwasher safe.
