Student on computer Southern Utah University welcomes Utah high school students considering communication careers to campus March 30 to April 1 for Media Boot-Camp. Hosted by the SUU Department of Communication, the event is designed to introduce prospective students to careers in media and other specialized communication fields.

SUU educators believe the rapidly growing communication industry is a far-reaching and sophisticated environment that requires base skills in addition to interpersonal, public and media-regulated communication aptitude. Specifically, a communication degree can qualify students to work as journalists, broadcasters, public relations practitioners, speech writers, television news producers, documentary filmmakers, videographers, web reporters and bloggers.

Media Boot-Camp will provide participants with a semi-formal dinner with talks by SUU’s esteemed alumni KC Smurthwaite, Devan Chavez, Jennifer Ruck and more; an all-day, hands-on experience with the University Journal, Thunder 91.1, SUTV, Thunderbird Advertising Group, Sports Communication and the Speech and Presentation Center; and a concert event with up-and-coming southern Utah DJs. Participants will gain insight from alumni, faculty and students, as well as an introduction to the crucial skills necessary in an increasingly media-encompassed world.

Samantha Burfiend, a senior majoring in communication from Taylorsville, Utah, said her SUU education has been filled with experiences that have given her confidence for her career.

“SUU has given me opportunities to work with campus media in areas of advertising and public relations before graduation,” said Burfiend. “With the help from my SUU professors and mentors, I have been able to begin building a portfolio and chasing my dreams."

Participants can attend this multi-day event for $100 per student. Discounts are available to students currently on fee-waivers. Transportation assistance is available at St. George Shuttle’s Media Boot-camp student pass located on the event’s website and social media platforms.
