Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) supports the psychological growth and development of the diverse Southern Utah University community. Through preventive and therapeutic services and programs, CAPS promotes academic excellence, involvement, personal growth, and social responsibility across the SUU campus.
“We think today's college students are particularly courageous and willing to engage in difficult and challenging interactions with each other and the community,” said CAPS Director Curtis Hill. “They want some meaningful changes and are willing to work for it.”
CAPS works to provide a welcoming environment for all students through awareness of cultural, individual, and role differences. They continually strive to make services accessible to as many people as possible through psychoeducational presentations, web-based information, and workshops.
“As developmental needs evolve in our students, it is exciting to be part of helping the SUU community adapt and change,” Hill explained. “We work very closely with students, trying to help remove roadblocks to their educational and personal growth.”
To better reach the campus community, CAPS currently offers a "counselor on duty" each day who can respond to questions or concerns (often by returning your call) and provides drop-in consultations each week at various locations.
The Let’s Talk events are free and no appointment is necessary, and students are seen on a first come, first serve basis. The consultations are informal and friendly, but also confidential. This program is a great way for students to connect to CAPS staff about specific problems and be introduced to the staff. Weekly times and locations include:
- Tuesdays 10-12 p.m. | Health & Wellness Office (ST 175A)
- Tuesdays 3-5 p.m. | Eccles Housing (room near front desk)
- Thursdays 12-2 p.m. | Non-Traditional Students Office (ST 172)
In addition to the individual, group, and crisis counseling, CAPS also works with SUU faculty and staff. Last year alone, they provided nearly 300 consultations with faculty and staff.
And as a fun change of pace, and possibly a lesser-known service, the CAPS office also offers career counseling. This counseling is focused on identity development and the creation of personal and shared meanings through the work we do and compliments staff and faculty efforts across the community.
With Curtis Hill as the director, DeNean Petersen, Blaine Edwards, Matt Reiser, Kristina Johnson, Merrill Jones, Andrea Donovan, Daniel Brager, Mariko Iwabuchi, Jonathan Ly, Chelsea Gambles, Brian C. Nyberg, Debbie Arenivar, and Amanda Healy make up the CAPS team.
