When Russell Wrankle took his first ceramics class as an undergrad student he was hooked. After receiving both his bachelor’s and master’s degree in art, he began working as a studio artist. When that didn’t feel right, Wrankle decided to give teaching a try.
Starting out as an adjunct professor at Southern Utah University, Wrankle discovered that SUU gave him exactly what he needed as a teacher and artist and the time to spend working one-on-one with his students.
“I love my field because of the community,” said Wrankle. “It is not only the professors, but the students. We learn from them too, no matter their age or experience.”
Wrankle teaches the following classes at SUU:
- ART 1130 3D design
- ART 4500 ST: Stone Carving & Multi-Media Lab
- ART 4790 Senior BFA Studio I: Professional Practices and Lab
- ART 4990 Senior Seminar- Specific Area of Study
“My favorite thing to teach is the possibility of the material,” said Wrankle. “I have always kept to traditional ceramics but recently, I have been in an art rut. So, I decided to try new things. There is always a possibility in this field.”
Wrankle reminds his students that the future is bright, but it is up to them to shape it.
“Art has been a very selective field in the past,” said Wrankle. “But the ability that these younger students have to market themselves, along with the possibilities from social media and the internet, they will be able to make that next step and answer the next question for their success.”
