The Tutoring Center at Southern Utah University is a great resource for students to take advantage of, especially when enrolled in a difficult course. While it might be great to just to go, it is important to make your time count. Here are a few ways to take advantage of your time in the Tutoring Center:
Bring all necessary materials.
While the Tutoring Center has computers, if your assignments are dependent on using a computer, bringing your own may be more efficient. Make sure to have any supplies including calculators, pencils, notebooks and textbooks.
Don’t be shy.
The queue is meant for students to “get in line” virtually to wait for help from the tutors. Don’t be afraid to get help! That is why you are there.
Try to work it out first.
It is much easier to be assisted when you know what portion of the problem is giving you an issue. It is also nice when the tutor can look at the work you have done to see how you are solving the problem, as a bit of a refresher for them!
Go before the due date.
So that you nor the tutor are feeling rushed, make sure to attend the Tutoring Center for help prior to the day that an assignment is due or a test is being held. It is important to get help and be able to take it in and study it without the stress of a deadline.
Try group tutoring.
Some students don’t know that group tutoring is available totally free. If you are in a class that multiple individuals are struggling in, try group tutoring! This is a great opportunity for students who would normally form a study group, but maybe need more guidance on a couple of topics.
Go for a more individualized approach.
One-on-one tutoring is available at a cost of $10 per session. These are hour-long weekly appointments that can be very beneficial if you are in need of help in a more consistent way.
You can even get help on the weekends.
Some students are super busy during the week with school, work, and other personal responsibilities. Luckily, the Tutoring Center offers help even on Saturday for students who potentially can’t make it during the week.
The tutors in the SUU Tutoring Center are all students who are recommended by SUU faculty. Each of them has been through and excelled in the courses they are assisting with. Learn about the Tutoring Center and how to sign up for one-on-one sessions.
