Founded in fall 2018, the Thunderbird Esports club is one of the fastest-growing clubs at Southern Utah University.
“In a nutshell, Esports is competitive video gaming,” said founder and club president Jaeger Christensen. “Just like there are physical sports like basketball or football, where they all have a game they play and the winning team scores the most points, it’s the same way with video games.”
This club has created a whole new social scene at SUU, providing students interested in gaming a place where they can go to make friends. Christensen encourages T-Birds who are thinking about participating in the club to simply come and see what it’s all about.
“When I first started the club it was to create a fun and competitive environment,” said Christensen. “We’ve grown and changed so much since then. We started it last year and since then we’ve had over a hundred people participate.”
The club is now split into two parts. One section of the club focuses on hosting fun gaming activities and running a small competitive league within the school for anyone wanting to participate. Another section of the club are teams that play video games competitively against other colleges and universities.
These students have been able to come together to see their passion and dedication pay off.
“I’ve had people tell me that coming to the esports club has made college better for them because they were able to make friends,” said Christensen. “We’ve been working really hard and have been able to get funding from the CSIS department for our very own computer lab.”
Students looking for a competitive gaming environment, a good time, or simply wanting to make new friends, can attend the Thunderbird Esport club’s weekly meeting in the Student Center Living Room every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Interested students are also welcome to email the club at suuesports@gmail.com.
