Nervous to start your online degree program? Starting a degree is a big step. It will require a lot of time and money. Beginning school online can also be different than what you’re used to in a traditional class setting. Here are six ways to prepare for your first online classes:
Research your Degree and Classes
Before you start, make sure that the degree you have chosen is right for you. Check how many credits it will be, what jobs are available after graduation, and what classes you will be taking. Make sure the topics are interesting to you and will help you get your dream job. It’s better to change your mind before you start then when you’re already in the middle of it.
Set SMART Goals
It’s important to set goals. Setting goals like doing homework first, studying for a certain amount of time every day, and other goals for your mental and physical health can help you not only feel more accomplished, but achieve your dreams. SMART goals are a great way to structure your ideas. SMART is an acronym for Specific Measurable Attainable Relevant and Time-Based. We recommend only choosing a few goals at a time so that you can put more focus on them.
Get a Calendar
A virtual calendar or planner can help you organize both your time and assignments. Google Calendar, Canvas calendar, or Reminders are great virtual calendars to try out. If you prefer to physically write things down, get a paper planner or calendar. Be sure to include class schedules, supplies or textbooks you may need, and all assignments and due dates.
Download Apps For Your Schoolwork
Canvas and Zoom are apps that you will most likely use. You can download them now to be prepared. Other apps like Evernote, Dropbox, Google Drive, Grammarly, and more are very useful for online college students. Don’t forget to download the SUU app. The app provides access to SUU resources, news, events, athletics as well as your virtual Student ID.
Schedule Study Time
We know that college students have busy lives. Managing your time well can help you accomplish everything you need to. Try setting aside a specific time each day to study, so you make sure it gets done and won’t get distracted by other plans. You can study in the mornings, afternoons, or in the evening, whichever works best for you. Consider setting an alarm or reminder to help you stick to your plan.
Create a Study Place and Stay Organized
A study place can help you stay focused and away from distractions. It can also help to have all of your supplies, like textbooks, computer chargers, and notebooks so you don’t have to waste time searching for everything. Try leaving your phone in another room and keeping your door closed so you can have quiet, uninterrupted time.
Doing these few things before you begin your online degree, can help give you the best head start. SUU is here for you every step of the way. If you would like more information on starting an online degree feel free to reach out to an advisor or a member of the online admissions team.
