How to Stand Out in a Zoom Interview

With the rise of COVID-19, many businesses have moved online, working remotely instead of in an office. Employers have had to reinvent their hiring process, including conducting job interviews through Zoom or other digital platforms. Although this generation has had the most exposure to technology, Zoom interviews can still be very difficult.
Throughout our lives, we have mostly been prepared for, and have been practicing for in-person interviews. Tips like make eye contact, dress to impress, and give a good handshake are all wonderful but apply to in-person interviews. What about translating these tips in an online setting? How do you stand out in a Zoom interview?
Dress to Impress
Despite the fact that interviewers won’t be able to see your entire outfit, it is still important to dress professionally. Not only will this prove to the interviewer that you are taking this position seriously, but it will also boost your confidence and put you in the right mindset for an interview.
Prepare in Advance
Research interview questions and know in advance how you’re going to answer basic questions such as defining your strengths and weaknesses. Even though it’s very important not to sound too rehearsed, practicing your answers will give you confidence and allow you to present yourself in the best way.
Make Eye-Contact
Even though you won’t be in the same space as your interviewer like an in-person interview, it is still very important to make eye-contact. Although it might feel a little weird, look into the camera of your desktop or laptop instead of the video feed. This will translate as making eye-contact, whereas looking at the video feed will translate as looking down.
The process of hiring has dramatically changed in the last few months. Both hiring managers and potential employees have had to adapt to a remote hiring process. Despite the fact that you might be interviewing in the comfort of your own home instead of an office space, the same interview tips still apply--albeit with slight adjustments. Make sure to prepare, dress well, and make eye-contact. You’ve got this!
