How 2020 Impacted Online Education

This year there have been many changes for all of us, including in education. Many universities and schools have shifted to online. More and more students are enrolling in online programs.

"2020 has been a compelling year for online education,” said Jonathan Roberts, associate director of Online Admissions at Southern Utah University. “The pandemic has acted as an accelerant, forcing universities to adapt; taking courses online at a rapid pace.”

In many cases, students have been unable to attend in person classes due to social distancing and quarantining, making online education the only option for educational learning for some. Online programs have provided the accessibility and flexibility needed during this year and have grown substantially. At SUU, online degree programs doubled in size from 2019 to 2020, while the online MBA program increased four-fold.

Many schools are putting in more resources to help their online programs, as well as experimenting with the best methods to teach school online. Both faculty and students are learning about a wider world of learning delivery methods. While some students are used to online school, for others it’s a new learning experience. It will take time for both students and teachers to adjust. Universities are continuing to adapt best to their student’s needs during these times.

“Online education has become an even more integral part of many students' education,” said Roberts. “It will be interesting to see how 2021 continues to impact online education."

Online education has been growing, changing, and been a major part of our lives this year and may continue to be of great importance in the future as well.
