If you are thinking of getting a Master of Accountancy but not quite sure if you should go for it or not? Here are just a few of the reasons why you should continue your college experience and further your career with a master’s degree in accountancy.
Three Reasons to Earn a Master's Degree in Accounting
1. Career Advancement & Higher Salaries
With a bachelor’s in accounting, you can make anywhere between $40,000 to $100,000 a year. With a master’s degree, you can expect to earn anywhere between $52,000 to $135,000 - and that's just an average! Maybe this difference doesn’t seem significant enough to you to make it worth it to get your master’s degree. However, not only will you be earning more, you will have the doors opened to other career opportunities you wouldn’t have otherwise. A graduate degree will increase your skills and knowledge in the fields that potential employers are looking at such as taxes, management, and a specific focus on whatever type of accounting is applicable.
2. Most States Require 150 Hours to become a CPA
If becoming a CPA (certified public accountant) is a part of your plan, you most definitely should work towards a Master of Accountancy. Most states, including Utah, require you to obtain 150 hours of college credit to become certified. A bachelor’s degree won’t cover all of that and so this reason alone will make it worth it for you to take your college education a step further and get your master’s degree. Also, while having a master’s degree can help you qualify for higher-up jobs, most companies tend to look to see if you’re CPA certified.
3. Additional Prestige & Sense of Accomplishment
We don’t want to admit it, but it feels nice to have developed an area of expertise. And what sounds fancier and smarter than that expertise being in professional accounting? And who doesn’t want the sense of accomplishment that comes with completing a master’s degree? In all seriousness, having a master’s degree can be what stands out on your resume compared to another candidate.
So, is getting a Master of Accountancy worth it? Yes. Not only will it provide you with a sense of accomplishment, you also will be accomplished. Take the next step and expand your horizons by earning your Master of Accountancy.
