President Mindy Benson Wishes SUU Students a Happy Finals Week

The following message was sent to all Southern Utah University students from SUU President Mindy Benson.
Dear Students,
Happy Finals Week! In between all of the studying, papers, and projects you’re working on, take a minute to reflect and congratulate yourself on what you have accomplished this semester. It’s been tough, but you’re almost there! Your hard work, dedication, and persistence will pay off.
As some of you might know, my professional background is in event planning. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to be a part of managing hundreds of large-scale concerts and events. As I’ve been thinking about all of you during this busy finals week, a few of the lessons I’ve learned from my event experiences come to mind. I’m sharing them here in hopes that they will inspire you to finish strong.
First, both during events and finals, obstacles, issues, and unexpected changes are inevitable. How we react and recover from them is up to us. When these moments arise, it’s easy to get stressed. Instead, take a deep breath, and remember that not everything is a crisis. You can be a problem solver! Ultimately, doing our best, being flexible, and learning to roll with changes helps us be more resilient when the next challenge comes our way.
Second, rely on your team. Managing events is a team effort. So is college. It takes numerous people behind the scenes to produce a successful event. Likewise, please don’t forget that you have hundreds of professors and staff members, and thousands of peers cheering you on during every step of your SUU path. We care about you and want you to be successful! At the beginning of the semester, I spoke to the freshman class about relying on each other using the classic Bill Withers song “Lean On Me”. Lean on your team and be someone others can lean on too. All of us here at SUU are here to support you and want to see you succeed.
Finally, relax! There is nothing better than soaking your feet or kicking back on your couch after a long event. Similarly, you’ve (almost) made it through a 15 week semester and it’s time to take a break! Please be safe over the holidays and enjoy this time to unwind, relax, and have fun before the spring semester begins.
You can do this, T-Birds! Finish strong and don’t forget to be flexible when challenges come your way, lean on your T-Bird Family for support, and take time to relax after finals are over. If you’re graduating this semester, our heartiest congratulations! We hope you’ll come back in April and walk in the commencement ceremonies. For everyone else, we are excited to see you on campus or online in January. In the meantime, best of luck with finals and enjoy your break!
