For students, it can be difficult transitioning through semesters, keeping a sense of urgency, and staying motivated. For many, it is key to start a semester with a positive attitude. Southern Utah University Online wants every student to have a positive attitude towards their next semester.
4 Tips for Starting a New Semester with a Positive Outlook
Find a Place to Study That is Free of Distractions
For the spring semester of 2022, one of the most important things you can do to give you a sense of positivity is to find a distraction-free study space. For many, it is important to be in a quiet, set apart, and dedicated area. Whether it’s a desk in your dorm, a table in your kitchen, or a cafe, make sure you are comfortable and free of distractions.
Set Aside Time
When starting any semester, it is wise to look at the credit hours you are taking and schedule enough time to complete the required work. A good rule of thumb is to set aside three hours of studying time for each credit hour that you’re taking. This can be a lot, but having this time set aside for studying will help you to be successful. Studying is important for in-person and online students, and we recommend both setting up a schedule for each semester to fit in the proper amount of credit hours.
Get Organized
Along with creating schedules and setting aside a study space, it is important to get yourself organized to help you keep your classes and assignments in line. Setting up folders in Canvas is a great option to help you keep classes and homework organized. Setting up a calendar on your phone can also be immensely helpful in figuring out when to complete your assignments. Canvas has a feature where it can share its calendar and sync it to the one on your phone. If you haven’t already, you can download the Canvas app through your phone’s app store.
Create a List of Goals
Another way to help you keep a positive attitude is to set achievable goals and accomplish them in the first few weeks of the semester. Setting goals can help you feel accomplished and help you build a pattern of feeling positive about school. Some of the goals you can set include turning in all assignments on time, attending all class hours, or visiting with a professor during their office hours. Whatever your goals are, make sure to keep them measurable and achievable.
Throughout this semester, there are many things that can help you gain a positive attitude toward the semester. Having a positive outlook can help raise levels of happiness and keep you motivated, even when the semester gets rough.
