Veterans Resource and Support CenterThe Veterans Resource and Support Center at Southern Utah University is located in the Sharwan Smith Student Center, next to the Leavitt Center for Politics and Public Service office and across the hall from the International Student and Scholar Services office. The Center exists to help military-connected students succeed at SUU.

“We try to be a one-stop-shop for all a veteran’s educational needs,” said Mike Miller, director of the Veterans Center and 30-year Army Veteran. “We want students to know that we are available and here to do whatever is necessary to help them. We want them to know there’s a place for them to go.”

What is a military-connected student?

What exactly is a military-connected, and how does the Veterans Center help them here at SUU? The term “military-connected students” refers to military veterans, active-duty military personnel, reservist, National Guard, or dependents (spouses and children) who may be utilizing the educational benefits of a member of the armed forces. Veteran Resources at SUU

Knowledge Locker

Created to help provide textbooks for reduced prices, student veterans can rent out any number of books in the Veterans Center Knowledge Locker for the entire semester, given that they are returned by the end of the said semester. Students pay only a $10 maintenance fee regardless of the number of books borrowed.

Students can only check out books that are on their book list found on their mySUU portal or course syllabus.

Veterans Lounge

A safe open space behind the Veterans Center office where student veterans can go to hang out. They can study, relax, or talk to one another.

Student Veterans of America Club (S.V.A)

The SUU chapter of the Student Veterans of America Club (S.V.A) includes more than 350 veteran students and veteran-beneficiary students at SUU. Any student can join, they participate in several community service projects and host many other events such as hiking, ax throwing, tailgates, and many more.

Credit for Military Training

SUU offers two options to obtain credit for military service. SUU offers two options to obtain credit for military service. One through the Joint Service Transcript process and the other through the Air Force CCAF portal. To learn more, meet with your academic advisor or the Veterans Center.

Financial Resources for Veterans at SUU

SUU and the Veterans Center offer multiple scholarship opportunities and grants to help students pay for their education and related expenses like tuition, housing, and school supplies.

Some of the top financial resources include the G.I. Bill, an education benefit that veterans and military dependents can use to meet their educational needs. All veteran related scholarships and support can be found on the Veterans Center’s website.

Events at the Veterans Center

The Veterans Center holds several annual events including a Veterans Day celebration (November 11), a program to honor 911, POW/MIA Recognition Day, and military branch birthdays. Each event helps to bring the community together with an activity that pays tribute to the services. Visit the Veteran Center website to see all upcoming events.
