College Packing List
Posted: August 17, 2023 | Author: Clare-Estelle Perkins | Read Time: 2 minutes
Move-in day is right around the corner and students may be confused about what and what not to bring. No worries, there are so many resources to help students know what essentials they need for their new college dorm.
A college packing list largely depends on where the student is staying for the semester. Whether or not students have access to things like a kitchen or nearby laundry facilities dictates what should be brought to school. The number of expected roommates can also affect what dorm supplies should be on the list. For students staying in the dorms, detailed packing lists can be found on the SUU housing website.
College Dorm Supplies and Essentials
When asked, current students gave these recommendations for what they found most helpful during their first semester of college.
Dorm Necessities:
- Laundry hamper and easily transportable bag
- Laundry detergent
- Extension cords
- Inflatable air mattress
- Small tool kit
- Overnight bag
- Desk lamp
- Storage bins
- Matching hangers
- Ear plugs and eye mask
Kitchen Supplies:
- Cups and Mugs
- At least one plate, bowl, and set of utensils
- Mini fridge
- Kettle
- Small dish soap
- Disinfectant wipes
- Kitchen scissors
- Water filter
Bathroom Essentials:
- Shower caddy
- All-purpose cleaning supplies
- Basic medicine and first aid -remember there is a Health and Wellness Center on campus
- Drawer organizers
On the Go Must-Haves
- Stick-on phone wallet for your student ID
- Good headphones
- Reliable snow boots for winter
- Sturdy and refillable water bottle
Current students were also asked what things they brought to college and ended up not using as much as they had predicted. Some students swear by the “less is more” ideology. Incoming students should be prepared but should avoid overpacking things that will gather dust.
Do NOT pack:
- Printer - students are provided with print credits in the library.
- A lot of pillows - you'll want the extra space.
- Iron and ironing board - try a steamer instead.
- Too many shoes - you won't need them, 5 pairs is plenty.
- Duplicates with your roommate(s) - be sure to coordinate!
- Your whole library - you won't be re-reading a lot
- Bulky sports gear - you can rent it from SUU Outdoors.
Packing can get tricky. Make it easier with a detailed list and good organization. Keep these recommendations in mind and remember to have fun preparing for this new adventure!
