However, it also presents unique challenges that can make staying on track more difficult. Without the structure of a traditional classroom, it can be easy to fall behind if you're not organized, disciplined, or productive.

Luckily, there are several effective strategies that online students can adopt to stay on top of their coursework and excel!

Let's take a look at what strategies can help online students stay focused, organized, and motivated throughout their academic experience at Southern Utah University.

Shorter Study Sessions

It can be tempting to try to power through long study sessions during the semester, but this is why we recommend shorter, focused study sessions for online students as it is more effective long term. For example, online students can study for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break (a.k.a. The Pomodoro Technique). This can help students improve focus, prevent burnout, and help them retain information more effectively.

Utilize a Planner and/or To-Do List

Keeping track of deadlines is crucial in online learning. A planner, to-do list, or even a calendar can help you stay organized by marking important due dates, exams, and assignments. You can also set reminders a few days ahead of time to ensure you have enough time to complete your work.

Stick to a Schedule throughout the semester

One of the greatest advantages of online learning is flexibility, but without a routine, it's easy to procrastinate. Our minds and bodies love schedules. Block out specific times each day for studying and completing assignments. By prioritizing your tasks, you will be able to build a routine that fosters productivity and consistency.

Minimize Distractions

Distractions are a major challenge for online students. Social media, household chores, tv shows or movies, and friends or family can all interrupt your workflow. During study time, put your phone on silent mode or limit screen time and other distracting apps. Also, let others know that you need focused time so they can avoid distracting you.

Take care of yourself

Staying on track with school isn't just about academics - it's also about physical and mental well-being. It's vital to get enough sleep, eat healthy, and take breaks during long study sessions. Exercise can help reduce stress or boost concentration, so be sure to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. For example, one graduate student found that doing reading assignments while on a stair stepping machine to be incredibly effective. The physical activity increased circulation and oxygen to the brain, making her more alert and better able to consume the information.

Reach out for help when needed

Online learning can feel isolating at times, but it's important to remember that your instructors and even peers are available to help. If you are struggling with a concept or assignment, don't hesitate to reach out to your instructor for clarification.

SUU also offers online tutoring sessions for students, where students can schedule appointments with tutors via zoom for help. SUU also has a Writing Center that provides feedback and helps students improve their writing skills, and online students are encouraged to schedule appointments with a tutor via a virtual message feature or zoom.

Stay Motivated

Online students often need extra motivation to stay focused and complete tasks on time. So, remind yourself why you are pursuing your education, whether it's to advance your career, achieve a personal goal, or learn something new. Setting both short-term and long-term goals will help you stay motivated throughout the semester.

Staying on track as an online student requires a lot of discipline, organization, and self-motivation. However, with determination and the right strategies, the flexibility of online learning can lead to a rewarding academic experience here at SUU.
