GAF Ideathon Challenge:
Transforming Roofing Waste into Sustainable Solutions
SUU and GAF - one of the largest residential and commercial roofing manufacturers in the US - are excited to announce an up to $3,000 award (in cash prizes) for innovative solutions to repurpose or recycle roofing materials that are not environmentally friendly. At the Cedar City, Utah location, GAF manufactures PolyIso rigid foam insulation and TPO and PVC Plastic waterproof roofing membranes used in flat commercial buildings.
We invite participants to share creative ideas on how to transform these materials, ensuring they contribute to sustainability rather than ending up in landfills. Whether it's finding a way to decompose the materials more effectively, creating artistic pieces, or developing scalable, eco-friendly disposal methods, we want to hear your ideas!
Goal: We aim to inspire innovators to rethink roofing waste and propose sustainable, scalable, and practical solutions that can minimize environmental impact.
Instructions/Guidelines
- Transfer of Ownership: Upon submission, you grant GAF all rights, title, and interest in and to your submitted ideas, designs, and concepts. This includes, but is not limited to, the rights to develop, modify, commercialize, distribute, and publicly display the submitted material in any medium or format, without further permission from or compensation to you.
- Use of Intellectual Property: GAF reserves the right to use, alter, or combine your submission with other works, either internally or with third-party partners, for the purpose of further developing, implementing, or commercializing the solution. This may include, but is not limited to, adapting the idea for production, testing, or research purposes.
- No Reversion of Rights: Once the intellectual property is transferred to GAF, you will not have any claim to further use, control, or ownership of the submission. You agree that GAF is not obligated to pursue or develop your idea, and GAF has sole discretion in how (or if) your submission is used.
- Acknowledgment of Original Work: By participating in the challenge, you confirm that your submission is your own original work or that you have obtained all necessary rights to submit the idea and transfer ownership to GAF. You also confirm that your submission does not infringe on the intellectual property rights of any third parties.
- Legal Requirements: You agree to cooperate with GAF in executing any additional documents or legal paperwork necessary to perfect the transfer of intellectual property rights. This may include signing formal agreements, intellectual property assignments, or other legal instruments that GAF reasonably requires.
- Confidentiality: If GAF chooses not to pursue your submission, GAF agrees to maintain the confidentiality of your submission and not disclose any proprietary, personal, or sensitive information to outside parties without your express written consent.
By submitting your proposal, you agree to these terms and acknowledge that GAF has the exclusive rights to your submission upon receipt.
Your submission should adhere to the following:
Originality
The idea must be your original work or include content that you have the rights to use.
Technical Feasibility
Present clear technical information and rationale behind your concept
Practical Implementation
Discuss how your solution can be put into action, including details of the materials, processes, or systems used
Sustainability Focus
Consider the long-term impact—will your solution prevent materials from reaching landfills again?
Scalability
Explain how your solution could handle different volumes of material—what would be done with a truckload versus twenty truckloads?
Safety and Compliance
Ensure that your proposal adheres to all applicable safety and legal standards.
Publicly Releasable Graphics
Submissions must include at least one publicly-releasable graphic representation of the concept (90 second video + Supporting documents [3 images or more])
Submissions will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
Innovation and Creativity: How unique and creative is the solution?
Scalability: Can your solution be expanded to handle larger quantities of waste material? For example, what would you do with a single truckload of the material? How about 20 truckloads?
Sustainability: How long will the solution last, and will it eventually end up back in a landfill, or can it remain in a sustainable cycle?
Execution Plan: Provide a clear and actionable plan for implementing your idea. What resources are needed, and what are the step-by-step actions to execute this project?
Impact: How much material can be repurposed, and how will this benefit the environment?
Feasibility: Can the idea be realistically implemented within a short period and tested effectively?
To spark your creativity, here are some potential approaches you can consider:
- Recycling: Can the roofing materials be broken down and reused in other industrial processes?
- Repurposing: How could the material be used in creating other products, materials, or installations outside the construction industry?
- Composting: Are there methods to safely alter the product in landfills for less impact to the environment?
- Engineering Solutions: Can the material be repurposed for construction or other practical applications?
In your submission, please provide thoughtful responses to the following questions:
Project Vision
How do you envision your solution working in practice? Please provide a detailed description of your proposed solution.
3-Month Development Plan
What do you expect your project to look like in the first 3 months of development? Describe key steps, milestones, goals, and anticipated progress. Walk us through it step-by-step as if you were the project manager.
Feasibility
What makes you confident that your idea will work for GAF? Include technical details, market analysis, or prior testing to back up your idea.
Testing & Developing
What resources would be necessary to test or pilot your solution? Discuss potential challenges, risks (including safety considerations), testing procedures, and scalability.
Team Structure
Indicate whether this will be an individual or group project. If it's a group project, describe the expertise required for each person on the team to ensure the project’s success.
Please submit your proposal and supporting materials by November 22nd, 2024. All submissions must be uploaded via the Qualtrics platform with the following sections:
- Project Vision
- 3-Month Development Plan
- Feasibility
- Testing & Developing
- Team Structure
Video Requirement:
- In addition to the written submission, all participants are required to submit a 90-second video that outlines the core aspects of your proposed solution.
- Make the video clear, concise, and engaging. It is a crucial part of your submission, and it must be included to qualify for consideration.
Optional Supporting Materials:
- You may also include up to 3 images of your project, though these are optional and not required like the video.
