Psychology Internship/Capstone: Steps to Get Started

  • Complete the Intern Orientation Training.
  • Complete the Annual Student Title IX Training.
  • Take the prerequisite course (PSY 3800) for Clinical Internships or (PSY 3410/3415) for Research Internships. For PSY 4890 Psychology Internship, you must have completed at least 30 credit hours and have a cumulative GPA of 2.5. For PSY 4891 Psychology Capstone Internship, you must have completed at least 90 credit hours, including at least 24 hours of psychology beyond PSY 1010, and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
  • Think of a career you would like to pursue.
  • Think of a population with whom you would like to work.
  • Identify a possible internship site that matches your career/occupational goals. You can review the placement options and availability. Do not contact any agency directly regarding a placement without first talking with the Southern Utah University Psychology Department.
  • Visit with the Internship Coordinator (Dr. Steve Barney, barney@suu.edu, GC 308 J) about your plans.
  • Obtain a copy of the syllabus for one of the following courses and read the instructions:
  • Meet with the Internship Supervisor at the agency where you will be working.
  • Create your Internship Objective Plan, according to the specifications detailed in the syllabus.
  • Submit your plan to the Internship Coordinator (Dr. Steve Barney, barney@suu.edu) for approval.
  • Complete the Agreement Form and have your Internship Supervisor complete their part of the form.
  • Submit the Agreement Form to the Internship Coordinator (Dr. Steve Barney, barney@suu.edu).
  • Complete and submit the Internship Permission Form  to the Department Internship Coordinator for a signature. Once signed, the Department Internship Coordinator will submit the Permission Form to the Registrar's Office for processing.
  • Begin working on your internship hours (45 Hours = 1 Credit Hour).
