International Student Program Extensions
Each I-20/DS-2019 has a start date and a completion date, students requiring more time than what is listed on the I-20/DS-2019 to complete their educational goals will need to complete a Program Extension Request, an International Student Financial Statement Form, and meet with a Designated School Official to extend your program deadline. Sponsored students should contact their sponsor to learn what is required for an extension.
Eligibility for program extensions varies depending on visa type. Be sure to follow the correct set of directions to avoid possible complications with your request.
F-1 Visa Holders
- Completion date on I-20 has not passed
- Consistently maintained your immigration status in good standing
- Delay is a result of one of the following
- Academic challenges (Change of major, etc. Meet with a DSO to discuss your situation)
- Medical challenges (Documentation from a licensed physician or psychologists is required)
- Proof of sufficient funds to cover costs needed to complete your degree. Complete the International Student Financial Statement Form
J-1 Visa Holders
- Current stay has not exceeded maximum program participation limit.
- Home institution is willing to support an extension
- SUU has exchange agreements with many schools throughout the world. With each agreement, SUU has to maintain a balance in students leaving and coming. Extensions can only be given if there is currently an equal balance in the exchange agreement.
- Completion date on DS-2019 has not passed
- Consistently maintained your immigration status in good standing
