SUCCESS Academy Reinforces Students' Intentions to Attend College at SUU

A recent survey conducted by the Southern Utah Center for Computer, Engineering and Science Students (SUCCESS Academy) confirms that the more time students spend on the campus of Southern Utah University, the deeper their commitment to attend SUU for their impending higher education.

The SUCCESS Academy is an opportunity for high schoolers to attend collegiate level classes in areas of specialized interest to them for half a day on the SUU campus. This particular partnership between SUCCESS, SUU and Iron County School District focuses on science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The enhanced learning environment for high schoolers is designed to increase student motivation as well as provide students with opportunities to experience the value of SUU.

Consequently, as the high schoolers spend more time at SUU, becoming acquainted with professors and college life, their affinity for and likelihood of choosing SUU as their source for a higher education, just a couple of years from, now increases.

Eighty-three students were asked to respond to the inquiry, “Have your on-campus experiences at SUCCESS Academy positively influenced your decision to attend Southern Utah University?” Forty percent of the ninth-grade SUCCESS students answered, “Yes, my perception of SUU is highly positive.” Likewise, more than 60 percent of the 10th-graders said the same. And, just more than 80 percent of those who will be college freshmen in only eight months indicated SUU high on their list of schools which they are considering for their pursuit of a degree.

One student answered, “Yes, because I feel the school is one of a kind where people care about each other.”

Another remarked, “Yes, I have learned that SUU has very good classes.” Along those same lines, another student recognized, “The professors are very personally interactive.”
