The Southern Utah University Department of Theatre Arts and Dance production of Eugene O’Neill’s Beyond the Horizon will be revived February 9 and 10, before heading to New York City for an off-Broadway run. This command performance will also be a fundraiser for the trip to New York. The show explores the tragic consequences of following someone else’s dream through the experiences of two brothers who are in love with the same woman.“It is such a pleasure to revisit this play,” says Director Matt Neves. “Our latest rehearsals have given us the chance to refine the play and to grow the performances. We are so excited that even more people can see it before its tour back east. We really need student, faculty and community support to make this trip possible. We hope to have sold out performances for these two days. All the proceeds will go directly to student travel needs. And besides, when was the last time that a $15 donation meant a moving night at the theatre?”
Set in rural America, Beyond the Horizon is the story of two brothers, Robert, a poetic dreamer, who wants to go to sea and experience the world, and Andrew, a born farmer, who plans to work the family farm. Their love for the same woman, Ruth, causes them to go against their natures; Robert stays on the farm, and Andrew goes to sea, and their lives turn to misfortune as they cope with the costs of their actions.
Sponsored by SUU’s College of Performing and Visual Arts and the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance, Beyond the Horizon will run Friday, February 9 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, February 10 at 3:00 p.m. in the SUU Auditorium Theatre. Beyond the Horizon will be presented in an intimate setting with limited seating. Tickets are $15 for General Admission.
