Pastel Artist at Art Insights

The SUU Department of Art and Design will feature Colleen Howe, a pastel artist from Salt Lake City, in this weeks Art Insights presentation. Howe will present, "Pastel as a Primary Medium," Thursday, March 8th at 7 p.m. in the J.L. Sorenson Physical Education Building, room 101.

Howe will discuss pastel as a serious medium for an artist, not just for sketching or mixed media and the materials that go into a complete project, pastels, paper and framing. Colleen states, “The graphic qualities of pastel are very satisfying. I like being able to layer one color over another, creating an optical mix.”

She studied painting at Brigham Young University and the University of Utah. Colleen continues to favor the subject of landscape through pastels, looking for the most expressive ways to convey the spirit and beauty of open space.

Among many recognitions Howe has received, she was awarded Outstanding Landscape in the Pastel Society of the Northeast Juried Exhibition in July 2005. She has been a Signature member of the Pastel Society of America since 2005. Her most recent exhibition was last fall at the St. George Art Museum.

Art Insights is a weekly program hosted during the Fall and Spring semesters by the Art and Design faculty. Art Insights brings professionals from many different fields of the visual art world to Cedar City. Admission is free, and the general public is invited to attend.
