Southern Utah University’s fifteenth President, Michael T. Benson, will receive the official right to govern the University at his formal installation ceremony Friday, September 21 at 1:00 p.m. This installation ceremony is the cornerstone of a week-long celebration within the SUU community to honor Benson and welcome a new era under his leadership.

The installation ceremony in SUU’s Centrum Arena provides the University and its surrounding community an opportunity to hear President Benson’s vision for SUU’s future. There will also be several guest speakers representing the President’s various endeavors and interests, live musical performances, and a processional of academic and institutional delegates from around the world.

All SUU students, employees, alumni and supporters are welcome to join the celebration by attending this historic event. The presidential installation ceremony is one of academia’s oldest traditions, and includes many unique symbols and customs that date back to the 12th century. SUU’s take on these formal proceedings will showcase the school’s history and strengths. The business-casual event is free and open to the public, and audience members are encouraged to arrive early for premium seating.

SUU Provost Dr. Rodney Decker will serve as macebearer, leading a large body of leaders and academics who stand in support of Benson as SUU’s 15th President. The Lieutenant Governor of Utah will also offer institutional greetings, as will Cedar City’s Mayor Gerald R. Sherratt. Chairman of the Utah State Board of Regents Jed Pitcher will conduct the formal investiture and charge—the actual transfer of leadership authority.

Following the installation ceremony, a reception will be held in SUU’s Sharwan Smith Center Rotunda. Again, all are invited to meet and congratulate the President in his new position. There will be live music and a dessert bar that includes cheesecake lollipops and a chocolate fountain for guests to enjoy.
