Annual Chemistry Competition Brings High School Students to SUU

What:
Southern Utah University will host its annual Chemistry Olympics, intended to provide high school chemistry students with a stimulating academic competition that demonstrates the importance of chemistry and science in academics as well as modern-day life.

Concurrently, SUU will host a workshop for high school educators, to provide chemistry teachers with the latest developments and best teaching practices in the field.

Also, SUU’s Associate Professor of Chemistry Hussein Samha will present “Fun with Gas” to both students and educators.

When:
Student competitions will begin at 8:30 a.m. Students will first take an individual chemistry test, and will then break off for group presentations and competitions, which will run through 11:30 a.m.

The teaching workshop for current high school science teachers will run from 10-11:30 a.m., and the “Fun with Gas” presentation will begin at noon.

Following a short lunch for all competitors and their teachers, the Chemistry Olympics Award Ceremony will begin at 12:45 p.m.

Who:
All members of the community and press are invited to support southern Utah’s high school science students as they compete in academic competitions against their peers.

The Chemistry Olympics is sponsored by Zions Bank, the Success Academy and the Utah production facility of the American Pacific Corporation.

The following schools are participating in this year’s SUU Chemistry Olympics, Beaver High School, Dixie High School, Enterprise High School, Grand County High School, Hurricane High School, Kanab High School, Millard High School, Snow Canyon High School, St. Michael High School, Success Academy and the Utah County Academy of Science.

Where:
All events surrounding the Chemistry Olympics will be held on the second floor of SUU’s Science Building, primarily in SUU’s chemistry labs—rooms 214, 222 and 224.

The teaching workshop will be held in room 114 of SUU’s Science Building, and the “fun with Gas” presentation will be held in room 214. The concluding Awards Ceremony will be held in room 214 as well.
